A platform for the community to connect and share resources

Health Promotion and Development Organization (HePDO) is a leading non-profit organization in The Gambia, dedicated to improving health and development outcomes for vulnerable communities. Since our founding in 1997, we have been committed to promoting health education, advocating for social change, and empowering local communities, with a special focus on women and children.

Our approach combines advocacy, community engagement, and capacity building to ensure sustainable development across The Gambia. By partnering with government agencies, local communities, and international organizations, HePDO delivers impactful programs that address critical health and social issues.

What we do

Discover our mission-driven approach

To reach everyone in The Gambia with appropriate health promotion measures that are accessible, acceptable, and practicable—ultimately contributing to the improvement of health and development.
A Gambia where communities are informed and respond appropriately to health and development challenges, with vulnerable groups adequately supported through social protection and preventive health measures.
  • Empowerment: We believe in empowering local communities to take charge of their health and development.
  • Collaboration: We work closely with partners, stakeholders, and communities to achieve sustainable impact.
  • Inclusivity: We prioritize the needs of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, ensuring no one is left behind.
  • Transparency: Our operations are driven by integrity, accountability, and openness.

Our Status

We are a registered local Non Governmental Organization based in the Kanifing Municipal Council, operating in three Municipalities; Banjul City Council, Kanifing Municipal Council and Western Region. We have affiliated youth and women groups in all the districts of the three municipalities. Presently we are implementing the ITN (Insecticide Treated Nets) component of the Global Fund malaria project in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Catholic Relief Services and other local communities.

Our Approach

Our approach to implement activities is focused on IEC (Information, Education and Communication) and BCC (Behavioral Change Communication) strategies and the distribution of ITNs (Insecticide Treated Nets) to the most vulnerable groups (children under 5 years and pregnant women).

Why choose us

Join us for initiatives

At HePDO, we are dedicated to transforming lives and improving health outcomes in The Gambia. Here’s why choosing HePDO to support or partner with is the right decision:

With over 25 years of experience, HePDO has built a reputation as a trusted and reliable organization. Our work in health promotion, advocacy, and community development has positively impacted thousands of lives across The Gambia. From leading national immunization campaigns to community mobilization efforts, we consistently deliver results.

At the heart of everything we do is a deep commitment to local communities, especially vulnerable populations like women and children. We engage communities directly, empowering them to take control of their health and well-being. Our programs are designed with the input of the very people they serve, ensuring that our efforts are effective, sustainable, and culturally appropriate.

We collaborate with government agencies, international organizations, and local stakeholders to expand our impact. These partnerships allow us to tackle health and development challenges from multiple angles, ensuring comprehensive solutions that make a real difference on the ground.

HePDO offers a wide range of services, from health education and advocacy to technical support for government programs. Our initiatives cover critical areas like immunization, clean water access (WASH), maternal health, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases. This holistic approach enables us to address root causes and provide sustainable solutions.
